Identity Theft
Protection
Identity theft as we can understand from the word itself is
when someone takes your personal information and uses it
without your knowledge. The criminal may use your identity to
access your accounts, credit cards, and even commit crimes in
your name. Here are some important tips for identity theft
protection -
- The most important tip for identity theft protection
is to keep your documents, which contains your personal
details in a safe place. Do not carry your Social Security
card in your wallet. The Social Security Number (SSN) is
widely used by business and government and it has been proved
to be of a special status as a little misplacement may cause
high security risk. There is a demand of Civil Code Section, a
kind of new rule and system, by the companies for all their
customers.
- Do not respond to scams. These scams pretend to be
banks, authorized stores or government agencies and they
disappear after they have received all your personal details.
They can do this over the phone, e-mails and even on regular
mails. Another tip for identity protection is to avoid giving
your personal details unless you made the contact. Do not
respond to a request to verify your account number or password
unknowingly.
- Always remember to destroy documents containing
personal information before discarding them. This is also
another way of identity theft protection.
- Some laws support identity theft protection. It
requires banks and other financial organizations to get the
consent of the owners before sharing any kind of personal
financial information with any outside company. You also have
the right to limit the information you share with your
company's affiliates.
- Another way to protect your personal information is
to use strong passwords, be it at your home computer or even
at your office. It should contain at least 8 characters, which
includes symbols, numbers, and combination of letters that is
easy for you to remember but difficult for others to find out.
Update your firewall, virus and spyware protection software
regularly. Set your Internet explorer security to at least
"medium". Do not click on the pop-up windows or in spam
e-mail.
- Another tip for identity theft protection is to be
very cautious while shopping online. Always check the website
you view before entering your credit card number or any other
personal details. Read the privacy policy available and see if
there is a way to avoid sharing your personal information. Do
not opt to shop from a site without the privacy policy.
- Check your bank statements and bills regularly if
there are any unauthorized charges or withdrawals, if so
report them immediately. Make sure you call the banks, if
bills do not get delivered in time. As this may mean someone
has changed the contact information to hide fraudulent
charges.
- Another tip for identity theft protection is, never hesitate to
ask questions before you share your personal information that seem
inappropriate for the transaction. Ask how the information will
be processed, used and whether it will be shared.
