thieves did half the crime. It is not only just a financial
crime. The situation is much more grave than just some dollars
involved. It takes years and thousands of dollars to get out
of the mess the criminals have made. Identity theft victims
can fell into nightmares like losing jobs, are refused loans
and get arrested for criminal activities.

For telephone scams - Someone calls you and tell you are
a winner of something. Only amount needed is the shipping fee
with your credit card. This is a common method used by the
criminals.
Solution: Do not give your credit card information to
anybody over the phone.
Job-related scams - Chance are that someone, may be your
colleague, is trying to steal your information by getting
access to your personal records on the computer.
Solution: Just do not give your personal password to
anyone, and make that password hard to guess for others.
Home related identity security theft - There are
possibilities that when you try to put information on your
checks for your memorizing convenience. Also you tend to carry
multiple credit cards with you when they are not always
needed.
Solution: Write as less information as possible on the
check and also try carrying only one credit card with you.
Stealing your mail - Someone can always get your
pre-approved credit card information from your mailbox.
Also there is information in your trashcan. Chances are
you might be dumping letters to your trashcan without even
opening them.
Solution: You have to keep track of your credit card report
and be aware of the accounts that are listed in your name.
Shred the files that contain information about you.
Shoulder Surfing Problem - Criminals do some research on
you before they try to do your identity security theft. There
are instances when you are going public places like
restaurants, phone booths, and other places where you have to
share your personal information, chances are someone is having
a close watch at you to find out the numbers you are dialing,
card you are using and any kind of sensitive information that
you are leaking.
Solution: Be aware of people watching you. Try not to leak
out personal information loudly over the phone. Do not use
credit cards everywhere and under the public scrutiny, try
other methods of payments and also take a receipt.
Hacking Problem - Identity security theft is most common
over the Internet. Your information can be purchased from
online database. Hackers can get your information from
merchant's database by breaking into it. Someone may use
cloned websites looking just like the original web site. This
is called phishing. You might be placing orders over an
unencrypted form. Hackers might get control over your system
and steal information from it.
Solution: - Never use unencrypted form for mailing personal
information. Deal with reputed merchants, who do not leak
their database. Be selective in sending out personal
information over Internet. Get into the original website by
typing the real name of the website. Use trusty firewall to
protect your system from the hackers.
